6 Alternatives To Throwing Rice At a Wedding

Today, we'll be discussing alternatives to rice throwing, specifically during the recessional (the part where you walk up the aisle as a married couple after your wedding ceremony is completed)! We hope you enjoy it!

Admittedly, rice throwing is not a common practice anymore, but we love the pictures and moments that it creates. Unfortunately, though, a wedding venue often doesn’t actually allow it, so we’ve put together a list of 6 top alternatives to rice throwing!

Flower Petals

I love the idea of wedding guests tossing flower petals during the recessional.  This option is relatively affordable, there’s a wide range of options available , averaging between $25-$100, your venue is more likely to allow it (because flower girls typically throw rose petals), and you can choose colors that will go with the color theme for your wedding!

Lavender

This idea might not be a good idea if you or any of your guests are very sensitive to scents.  However, if you love the smell of lavender (like I do), then you’ve gotta do this!  It’s one of the more affordable options with most places offering 1lb of dried lavender for $12-$15.  Plus, can we talk about how cute these little cones are 😍

Bubble Blowing

If you remember from last week, one alternative to an end of night sparkler exit is a bubble exit.  Well, having guests blow bubbles during your recessional is another awesome idea.  Bubbles is a relatively inexpensive option, and offers a pretty wide range of customizability options averaging between $25-$75.

Bird seed

Bird seed is going to be a really fun option, and it’s going to average around the same price or a little less than the lavender!  There’s also a lot of variety in bird seed too, so you can opt for smaller or larger bird seed if you want.  This is going to be the best option for outdoor ceremonies, but still check with your venue for their specific rules.

Long Sparklers or Pampas Grass For Guests On End Seats

Ready to feel like a king and queen walking under a row of sparklers after you promise your life to each other and seal the vows with a kiss?  Having your guests that are seated on the end of the aisle hold long sparklers or pampas grass for you to walk under is the way to go!  Either place the sparklers/pampas grass on the aisle seat with a card before the ceremony begins, or have your wedding planner pass it out with an explanation card after your guests are seated, and before the processional begins.   Check out the following sites for some more pricing info:

Plantable Confetti

Plantable confetti is definitely going to have to be run by your venue.  This option definitely won’t be the perfect fit for everyone, however, for nature loving/environmentally conscious couples who have an outdoor wedding in a grassy field, this is perfect!  You can also scatter these on your tables with a little sign in the centerpiece explaining that the confetti has seeds and will grow wildflowers if guests scatter them in their yard!  Perfect 2 for 1!  This plantable confetti is probably one of the more costly options listed in this blog, however the cost is going to depend greatly on the volume of confetti needed, so for a smaller weddings, it should still be reasonable.  Check out the sites below for some pricing info:
